Community Meeting and Free BBQ

A development application has been lodged for 17-27 Skyring Terrace (currently the Riverside Industrial Sand site). 

You’re invited to a community meeting to discuss what’s been proposed and how you can have your say!

Newstead has experienced the fourth largest increase in population density of any suburb in the country, with tens of thousands of additional residents predicted to move there over the next two decades. We must future proof this area with new green space and essential public infrastructure. 

That’s why when the 17-27 Skyring Terrace was put up for sale last year, I launched a petition calling on all levels of government to work together to ensure at least 50% of the site was used to establish a new riverfront park and complete the riverwalk along this stretch. Thank you to the almost 2000 residents who provided their support. 

Council and the QLD Government failed to act, and now a private developer has lodged a development application proposing the following: 

• 3 towers 
• 381 luxury apartments (760 bedrooms) - 
• 160 ‘boutique’ hotel rooms
• No dedicated affordable housing 
• 611 car parks
• No open green space, just paved laneways
• 220m of riverwalk

We think their proposal is unacceptable, but I don’t think we should downplay the impact local residents have made by demanding better for their community! The riverwalk has been included in the application, and the developer is claiming 50% of the site as ‘public realm’ space (although this is just a lot of paved pathways, not open green space). 

Our campaign is far from over and we need your help to keep up the pressure! This is a once in a generation chance to activate this riverfront site and open it to the public. We must demand better!
